WELLBEING & SAFER PLAY
Responsible play: practical steps and support
Gambling can cause financial and emotional harm. There is no guaranteed way to win, and no strategy can remove the risk of losing. The safest choice is not to gamble. If you choose to participate where it is legal, use the steps below to protect your wellbeing.
Safer-play steps before starting
- Check eligibility and lawOnly participate if you meet the legal age and local requirements. Do not access a service where it is prohibited.
- Set a spending limitChoose an amount you can afford to lose without affecting rent, food, bills, savings or other essentials.
- Decide a time limitPlan breaks and an end time before play. Use an alarm if helpful, and do not play when tired, upset or under pressure.
- Keep gambling separateDo not borrow, use credit you cannot repay, or treat gambling as a way to solve money problems.
- Stop at your limitDo not chase losses or raise your limit to recover money. Stop when you reach the time or spending boundary.
- Take a break and reviewStep away regularly. If play is no longer enjoyable or feels hard to control, stop and speak with someone you trust.
Warning signs that it may be time to stop
- Spending more money or time than you planned, repeatedly.
- Trying to win back losses or feeling compelled to continue.
- Borrowing, missing bills, or hiding gambling from people close to you.
- Feeling anxious, irritable or distressed when you try to stop.
- Gambling affecting sleep, work, studies, relationships or mental health.
One warning sign is enough to take seriously. You do not need to wait until a problem becomes severe before asking for help. Consider taking a break, blocking access to gambling services, and talking honestly with a trusted person or qualified counsellor.
Finding support
Look for a recognized gambling-harm support organization, health professional or helpline in your country. Choose a service whose identity you can verify independently. If you are in immediate danger or are thinking about harming yourself, contact local emergency services now. Friends and family can also seek support for themselves when someone’s gambling affects them.
If using a real gambling operator, check whether it offers deposit limits, time reminders, cooling-off periods, self-exclusion and account closure. These tools differ by operator and location; read the terms and do not assume they are available. The Criccode demonstration on this site is not connected to such account controls.
